[Review by Seven] Since both Furball and Chicken had to do their annual military services, PAiN skipped a month. Still, 1997 was the year with the most issues ever, so we're not complaining. Strangely, there's no title screen: you start directly at the editorial. The music is dark, slow and melancholic, as you may guess from its name (March of Doom by Big Bear). Not very suitable for the Christmas season, but it fits the announcement that Advanced Gravis has stopped it's soundcard business. Lots of announcements in the 22 articles: a first Swiss FTP-server, the Buenzli 6, and CPUU, a Unix/Linux demogroup. Furball outlines the three possible paths he can see the scene following in the future: DOS, Win95, or Linux. The Tech corner learns the coders how to protect their intros by making a COM-cryptor, and the layout of the charts has been redesigned. There are also two German-only articles, which is a kind of setback IMHO after the increased international interest in PAiN. less.. |
